Sleepless Nights

Last week I couldn’t sleep well because I was sick and I was so blocked up I kept waking up in the middle of the night.

This week I can’t sleep because I’m too upset.

It’s 3.06am and I have been in bed since 11pm.

My mind is too filled with noises of distress and disappointment. I’ve been trying to distract myself using various ways and nothing seems to stop me from thinking and worrying.

I wish I could just temporarily put all those thoughts into a little black box and lock it away.

Happy Times

“So what is making you so happy?” you ask. Well let me tell you what.

Voice Lessons with Jacs

After wanting voice lessons for almost half my life, I’m finally starting weekly lessons for real…and with the best – Jacs!! I had one trial lesson with her over Christmas holidays so she could listen to my voice (basically to see if I’m going to be good enough!), but now that I’m back in HK for real, I can finally have lessons routinely. And I tell you what – I AM SO HAPPY. Not only just that, I’ve only had my 2nd lesson 2 days ago and I’ve already improved a lot in my warmups! I’ve been taking about 10-20 minutes everyday just practicing (sorry for all the innocent victims who have had to suffer from noise contamination – namely my Maid and The Floppy Hair – but as Jacs said, “Who cares!”) and that has definitely made a difference! In fact, I’m warming up at this very moment! :)

Not only that – Jacs has also said I’m a soprano without a doubt. I hit a Top F last lesson just in warmup, and she said there’s still room for my range to grow. Woohoo!

Oh…I’m also learning a new song – Jason Robert Brown’s “I’m Not Afraid of Anything” – which is an absolutely beautiful song!

New Project

Actually, I’ll keep that as a secret for now :)

Kitty Seminar

Enough said. Cats are the best, period. And Cat Vets are the best people ever. :)

Yoga Marathon

I’ve joined Pure Yoga this time round and I’m going to yoga every 2 or 3 mornings, 2 sessions each time. OH I LOVE IT <3

Anyway, I’m off to read a book and learn my new song now! xx

Back In HK…and jetlagged…

Yup…so as the title has said - I’m bloody jetlagged. Been back since Sunday morning at 8.30am (delayed for almost 2 hours because of Heathrow catering) Spent almost the entire Sunday and Monday morning cleaning my room – throwing out bags and bags of stuff and wiping down every surface to accommodate my 2 huge, overweight suitcases (don’t even get me started on how much I got charged…) My room here is half the size of my room in Edinburgh (plus in Edinburgh I had the entire living room as well to put stuff!) so it’s not been easy trying to make space for the things I’ve brought back. I don’t even want to think about the fun I’m going to have when my 9 boxes of stuff arrives via the shipping company………

I finally got to see Mr. Floppy Hair again. It’s been 4 months and felt like forever since I last saw him, and my heart was literally pounding with excitement when I was walking up to his flat from the MTR. I ended up falling asleep half the time I was at his place that afternoon (as usual after I get back from UK) but it was just nice to be cuddled and spoiled :) Plus FH demonstrated his amazing cooking skills again – chicken pasta, broccoli & salad. Yummmm.

Went to see Toy Story yesterday (!!) and we both LOVED it!! It did however make me feel bad for throwing out / packing away my old stuff toys on Monday morning – really do hope they don’t end up in a place like Sunnyside!! Those who have no idea what I’m talking about – watch the movie!! :)

Well going to maybe try and fall asleep again…if I can. Going to someone’s place today for BBQ +/- Beach. I can wear my new summery / beachy dress I bought from Nice :)

*yawnnnnnnnnnnn*

Leaving On A Jet Plane – Edinburgh Chapter

5 years in Edinburgh – and now it’s coming to an end.

The last few weeks have been hectic – Results, France, Graduation, Car, Packing, Bank, MORE Packing. Seriously how did I end up with SO MUCH STUFF?! It took a really long time and much heartache as I had to force myself to throw / give away many things, but I finally managed to finish packing (pretty much).

I’ve managed to meet up with most of my close friends here. And those who I didn’t manage to see before I fly out – SORRY!

Less than 48 hours left in Edinburgh before I fly back to HK for good, with Glee playing on my iTunes, I decided it’s time to reminisce a little.

I used to hate Edinburgh to some degree because I’ve always associated it with vet school / barely any social life, but during the past weeks I’ve finally been able to enjoy being in this place now that I’m no longer stressed out of my head.

I guess what I’m going to miss most is my friends,  my (parentless) freedom here, the Fringe Festival and the possibility to go down to London / West End easily to see shows. Well and also making YouTube videos :)

I’m also going to miss Jo Richards, my Jazz Dance teacher.
Thank you for teaching me how to dance.

I’m also a little sad to leave the Dick Vet Musicians, a choir / orchestra that I’d put in so much work over the past year and a half setting up. I never thought I would actually make it possible, and having had 2 concerts now, I’m just really proud and grateful towards those who share my passion and have made it happen. Thank you guys – hopefully it’ll continue to grow bigger and stronger for years and years after I’ve left.

There are so many people I’m going to miss here. You all know who you are. THANK YOU.

One person in particular who I have to thank and will miss dearly is my neighbour Mrs Mills (I never got used to using her first name). She’s been there for me the past 3 years through thick and thin, my happiness as well as my emotional rollercoasters. She’s been one of my major sources of support and she was always there to tell me that I am worth more than I think I am. I wouldn’t have made it through the past 3 years without her. THANK YOU for showing me love and friendship.

While I’m writing this, I’m simultaneously online trying to speak to Anita and Montenegro charity and trying to type out an provisional anaesthetic protocol. Talk about multi-tasking!!

Well I guess I need to go now and clean my flat some more before I move out for good!

Graduation & Royal College Admission!!

The past 2 days have been absolutely hectic and exhausting!! I went to sort out my international driving license, bits of bank stuff, discussed the selling of my car at Toyota, Gradution…all within 48 hours!

Friday evening was the Pre-Graduation Drinks at Summerhall…which was about an hour and a few staff members were there, including my favourite Danielle Gunn-Moore & Alastair MacDonald – the 2 lecturers who’ve meant the most to me in vet school. Danielle  told me that I must keep in touch and keep sending her photos and jokes :)

DGM, Me, Alastair, Mom

Next day was Graduation Day! Took forever just to get the gown & hood pinned & fixed to my clothes (my mom was an uber-perfectionist…!!) and finally got our professional graduation photos taken. Anita was freaking out about her very wild hair…and despite having had a haircut (apparently…), it was still thick as a bloody forest, and getting it to behave was a bloody nightmare!!

We had our Final Year 2010 photo taken after a lot of fussing about…and the wind that kept blowing our precious hair really didn’t help!

Finally we went into McEwan Hall for the Graduation Ceremony (2.30pm – 4.30pm) with the Biology people, which included Katia who I’ve known since high school.

As I sat down and looked at the graduation program (with the names of people graduating in order) and saw that my name was in bold* along with a few others. Hmm…what? Then I looked below…and read the footnote:

“ * with Distinction

HOLY COW. I had passed final year with a freaking distinction?!!!!!! Stephanie & Frances on either side of me also had distinction and their jaws dropped as well when I pointed it out to them.

I mean like, HOLY FREAKING COW…!!

It was even on the graduation certificate that I’d distinction…my heart was seriously pounding with so much excitement and surprise!!

As some guy was opening the ceremony with a speech of reflection…a baby was crying and crying and CRYING…and none of us could actually pay attention to a single word that was spoken. We all tried so hard not to laugh and giggle…even the lecturers looked like they wanted they wanted to snigger as the baby started SCREAMING. Eventually, the mother took the baby out when she realised the baby wasn’t going to stop any moment soon!!

The other speeches actually turned out quite funny, especially when the Chairman was talking about the vet school and accidentally said “I am deeply DEPRESSED……I mean…I am deeply IMPRESSED…” It was his 6th (and last) Graduation Ceremony of the summer and he was so tired…bless him!

The vets had to stay till 5pm for the Admission Ceremony into the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. After a short speech, we were told to stand up for our oath:

In as much as the privilege of membership of The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons is about to be conferred upon me, I promise and solemnly declare that I will abide in all due loyalty to The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and will do all in my power to maintain and promote its interests. I promise above all that I will pursue the work of my profession with uprightness of conduct and that my constant endeavour will be to ensure the welfare of animals committed to my care”

And with those words, we were officially members of the Royal College.
MRCVS

A huge roar of cheering from us immediately filled the hall :)

We got our RCVS certificates and signed the register. Then awards were given, and no surprises, Rachel received 4 awards along with the William Dick Award. We all cheered :)

After another hilarious speech from the RCVS President, describing us as parasites who sucked our parents’ bank accounts dry and brought home all our dirty washings, we left the hall glowing with our RCVS certificates.

I am now officially a Veterinary Surgeon :)

Holiday in France!

So after spending 5 blissful days in France, I’m back in Edinburgh.

I trained down to Flora’s place in Bath last Wed (23/06) and got to walk around the town on Thurs. It was quite pretty, but smaller than I’d expected. Accidentally bought 2 dresses (opps!) and then for the first time in ages went to the gym with Flo that evening. Her boyfriend Tobias arrived later on and we flew out to Nice 7am Friday (25/06). Flight was slightly delayed because the French air traffic control was on strike (very french I was told…) We met up with Uli at the Nice airport (who at that point was fretting because we were late and she didn’t check the arrivals board!). We got our car from Europcar and made our way to their friend’s Thomas L’s place in Antibes, who was flying back to UK for his friend’s wedding. We were really lucky to be able to stay at his place for most of the trip because otherwise hotel / renting flat would have been extremely expensive since it was high season!!

We then got ready for the Swedish Midsummer Festival and headed off to the beach.

For the most part, it was just like a beach party, except with the famous Frog Dance at around 10pm ish. It was a really funny experience and I had no idea what I was doing while people were pulling me in all directions during the dance!

The next day was the beginning of our quest to get tanned :)
We got to beach near Antibes town centre and proceeded to roast ourselves, although being careful with some sunscreen because the sun was so strong! Finally we made our way back home to get ready for dinner with many of Flo/Tobias/Uli’s friends who used to / still works in Amadeus. I’ve not had a 3-course meal in ages and I was so stuffed by the end of it!!

Thank god we went for a long walk afterwards along the beautiful coast of Antibes!! There were so many gigantic yachts at the dock that made us drool with envy. If only…!!

We got up early-ish the next day for a little hike around Cote d’Azur.
The scenery was absolutely stunning.

Took me a little while before I got into the mood of hiking (by then I was skipping around the rocks like a hyperactive kid!) but the hike soon ended (2 hours ish). We got back to the flat to freshen up before we went into town for lunch at this place famous for its salad. I had one of the BEST dishes of my life:

Salade de fruits de mer (Seafood Salad).

Yummmmm.

Tobias and Uli both buggered off to watch World Cup after lunch (Deutschland vs England), so Flo and I decided to spend more time tanning on the beach instead. This time we made our way to Juan les Pins (JLP), where the sand was artificial, but the beach was so much nicer and less rocky and the seawater was amazing!

Unfortunately the sun went away really quickly, so we walked around JLP instead while waiting for Tobias to come pick us up after watching the football game. That was when I found the amazing purple dress I just HAD to buy, along with a pair of grey leggings to match. But then SHOCK HORROR, I realised I didn’t bring my wallet, so I paid a deposit with the 30€ I had with me and luckily the shopkeeper agreed to set it aside for me as that was the last dress!

We went out of dinner, and then went back to JLP for drinks. Uli wasn’t with us as she decided to go to a BBQ at a friend’s place after the football game. Luckily, the shop was still opened so I paid for my dress and was glowing with joy by the time I walked out of the shop holding the little brown bag! We went to a bar called Pam Pam and had the prettiest and cutest cocktails of my life!!

One of my drinks was inside a wooden MONKEY!!
I was so tempted to actually kidnap it home!!

We woke up really early the next morning to go to JLP for our last chance to beach and tan because Thomas L was coming back to Antibes that evening and we’d had to move into an hotel in Nice. By the end of the tanning mission, I was rather pleased :) We managed to get into Nice to return the car to Europcar by 5pm and then checked into our hotel, where we stayed for our last night in France. We went and walked around Nice’s old town, dinner, then walked along the beach a little before going for a quick drink. The beach in Nice is full of peddles instead of sand, which is not the most comfortable beach ever but nevertheless it looked quite pretty in a rather unique way. And when the waves washed up and down the pebbled shore, it made a very crisp clattering sound which was amazing.

Beach in Nice – featuring my new GORGEOUS dress & leggings from JLP :)

Final morning in Nice – we packed and had to check out by 11am. We left our bags in the hotel’s storage and then went out SHOPPING. We were on a mission to find a dress for Uli to attend her friend’s wedding. I swore to myself that I would not buy anything…and sod’s law, ended up making the first purchase out of the 3 girls – a floaty top from Mango. We went to some boutiques before lunch, and then Galeries Lafayette, where I bought a few things again! MAJOR EPIC FAIL. In the end I decided not to feel guilty about it, instead to just cut down my shopping in HK this summer – I mean…how often do I get to shop in FRANCE?! And come on…French people have such exquisite taste and the clothes are simply AMAZING!!

On the other hand, Uli’s dress hunt was not going well! The closest 2 dresses we found, we had to give up. One was beautiful from Burburry, which fitted perfectly but was too expensive, and SOD’s LAW, it wasn’t going to be sales until a week AFTER!! The 2nd dress – it was either a size too small or too big. We were about to give up when, finally, I spotted a blue dress buried amongst others. I grabbed it off the rack and shouted for Uli. She tried it, and it fitted perfectly. That was it. WE’D FOUND THE DRESS.

Perhaps I should just start go into a new career of being a personal shopper instead!! That would be so much more fun! :P

It was time for Uli to fly back to Dresden. We waved her goodbye at the bus-stop, and then walked around Nice a little more before it was our turn to go.

Me & Flo at the top of a hill – overlooking Nice

But hey, the story doesn’t stop here…not like this…because what better way for France to show their french love than a DELAYED FLIGHT?!

Yup. Delayed for 30 minutes at least.

Well, it was actually Gatwick’s fault for the delay, but hey...everything in France either strikes, delays, or don’t come at all. We made me back to London in the end…but didn’t get to Tobias’ place in Hammersmith till about 12.30am, and by the time we crawled into bed / sofa, it was at least 1.30pm. Flo’s train from Paddington to Bath, as well as my train from Kings Cross to Edinburgh, were both at 8am…so we had to drag our sleepy butts onto the tube at about 7.10am.

Then guess what?! Yes – you guessed right – DELAY on the tube. I only JUST made it onto my train in King Cross, and trust me, running through the tube up and down the bloody stairs with my luggage was really NOT FUN!!

To make my journey even more thrilling – the air con on the train was malfunctioning, and I felt like I was in a SAUNA for 4.5hrs!! I only managed to sleep a little bit because it was so hot, and just tried to distract myself by reading my novel “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet” by David Mitchell.

I got back to Edinburgh by 12.30pm and went for my haircut…which ended up with my hair quite a bit shorter than I’d expected. A change I suppose?!! I’m sure I’ll have posters of my new hairdo after this weekend’s graduation!

Well…this has taken me a rather long time to write…so I better get going! Not done much flat-cleaning still, and my mom is here TOMORROW!! I’m going to try and finish off the novel, get some sleep and then do more cleaning tomorrow before I go and pick up mom from the airport! Need to also sort out documents for the Removal Company as well as sending a letter to my flat agency to officially let go of my flat!! Eek!!

Goodnight y’all xx

I’ve been waiting to write my first entry here for the past few days, and finally I can.

I PASSED MY FINALS.

I’m now a VET.

I checked it 3 times when results came out, and twice after I got home.

It’s still a bit surreal and I’m still waiting for it to sink in.
I’m just SO relieved. Thank god.

Most people in the year did extremely well, more people got Credit than just a Pass, and I think 14 even got Distinction!!

Well done everyone.

Unfortunately some didn’t make it this time round, and it’s really sad because I really expected them to pass. But they will in August. It’s shit now, but they will come out in August knowing more than the rest of us. They WILL pass with flying colours. And they will be brilliant vets.

I sat in the Meadows for the past 6 hours with a load of now VETS under the sun. And my god, I’m SO TANNED now just from today it’s crazy!!

Thank you to everyone who had faith in me while I was freaking out all over the place.

5 years – I finally did it.
